Mineral scale silently chokes well performance.

Carbonate, iron, manganese and silicate scale build up on screens, in the gravel pack and out into the formation — narrowing every flow path the well depends on. Learn how HCT’s catalyzed, inhibited acid chemistry dissolves what conventional treatments leave behind, without compromising the casing or the formation.

DESCALER BY THE NUMBERS

Catalyzed chemistry, measured results.

Well-Klean© Descaler is an organically inhibited, catalyzed acid. The inhibitor controls how fast it spends, so it keeps working deeper into the deposit instead of burning out on the first scale it touches.

12 hrs

Mineral scale dissolution

Carbonate and sulfate scale dissolve in a single downhole soak.

72 hrs

Oxide metal dissolution soak

Iron and manganese oxide crusts need the longer, controlled soak.

½×

Product needed vs. conventional

Half the volume of conventional acid to treat the same well.

Work output in half the time

Catalyzed chemistry: half the product does twice the work.

THE PROBLEM

How scale destroys well performance.

Scale deposits accumulate on screens, perforations, the gravel pack and the surrounding formation — progressively restricting flow paths and raising energy costs, usually long before anyone recognizes the cause.

01

Screen and slot blockage

Mineral precipitates fill screen openings and perforation slots, shrinking the effective open area available for groundwater to enter the well.

02

Rising energy costs

As scale narrows the flow paths, the pump works harder to hold yield. Energy consumption climbs while specific capacity drops.

03

Formation cementation

Over time scale cements gravel pack and formation particles together, turning porous media into a rigid, low-permeability barrier mechanical methods cannot restore.

04

Bio-mineral composites

Where bacteria are entombed inside the deposit, conventional acid washes stall. Treatment has to dissolve both the mineral matrix and the organic layer binding it.

SCALE TYPE · CARBONATE

Calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate

The most common well scale — and the fastest to dissolve once the chemistry can reach it.

SCALE TYPE · METAL OXIDES

Iron and manganese deposits

Iron carbonate, iron oxide crusts and manganese oxide need a longer, controlled soak.

SCALE TYPE · SILICATE & COMPOSITE

Silicate scale and bio-mineral mixes

The deposits HCl cannot touch. Descaler dissolves silicate and the composites biofilm leaves behind.

LIMITATIONS OF CONVENTIONAL METHODS

Why standard acid treatments underperform.

Hydrochloric acid is the most common descaling agent in the water well industry, but its chemistry creates problems that often outweigh its benefits.

CONVENTIONAL HCl

Fast, corrosive, and shallow.

✕  Reacts too quickly — spends on the first scale it contacts, leaves deeper deposits untouched

✕  Produces toxic chlorine gas that demands extensive safety protocols

✕  Highly corrosive to steel casings and stainless screens

✕  Large volumes of hazardous effluent need costly disposal

✕  Cannot dissolve silicate scale or metal oxides effectively

THE PROCESS

From analysis to verified results.

Every treatment is engineered around site-specific water chemistry and well construction data. This is the general protocol framework.

01

Pre-treatment analysis

Water chemistry and deposit analysis determine the scale composition, acid volumes and soak durations — preventing both under-treatment and unnecessary chemical use.

02

Staged application and agitation

Descaler goes in in controlled stages with mechanical agitation between cycles. Each stage reaches progressively deeper deposits as the inhibitor regulates acid spend.

03

Neutralization and disposal

Post-treatment effluent is neutralized on site. Properly processed, the discharged water is typically beneficial for surface disposal to soils, ponds and lakes.

04

Performance verification

Step-rate pump testing and water quality sampling confirm the degree of capacity recovery against the pre-treatment baseline.

PRE-BLENDED

Consistent by design

Well-Klean© Pre-blend contains every descaling component in one drum, so field mixing never changes the chemistry.

WIRE-WRAP CASINGS

Add Concentrate

For wells with wire-wrap steel screens, additional Concentrate is advised for enhanced corrosion protection.

INTEGRATED APPROACH

Pair it with BC

Scale dissolution works best with WaterSOLV™ BC bioremediation, so biofilm and mineral fouling are treated in a single mobilization.

RESULTS

Restoring hydraulic efficiency.

Successful scale dissolution re-opens flow paths through the wellbore, screen, gravel pack and near-well formation — and the improvement shows up in the pumping test.

GPM / ft

Specific capacity recovery

Removing scale from the screen and formation returns specific capacity — gallons per minute per foot of drawdown — toward original development values.

Fewer kWh

Lower operating costs

With flow restrictions gone, pumps return to design-efficient operating points, cutting both power consumption and maintenance frequency.

+Years

Extended asset life

Proactive scale management through periodic chemical rehabilitation adds years of service and defers costly replacement drilling.
